Super Mario Run is running a limited-time Movie Mode update tied to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, according to TouchArcade. The event lets players unlock and play one stage per day for free, even if you don't own the full-game unlock, as long as your Nintendo Account is linked.
The full-game unlock is also half off for a limited time during the event. The movie itself opens April 5.
Key facts:
- Super Mario Run's Movie Mode update is live for a limited time.
- Players can play one free stage per day during the event.
- Available to players who link a Nintendo Account, even without the full-game unlock.
- The full-game unlock is 50% off during the event.
- Tie-in for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, releasing April 5.
How the event works
Per TouchArcade, the Movie Mode event unlocks a free stage per day for everyone who links their Nintendo Account to the game. That includes people who haven't bought the full-game unlock. If you have the unlock, you get the full game plus the daily free stage.
The event runs alongside the half-off sale on the full-game unlock. So even if you bounced off the game years ago, this is one of the cheapest times to jump back in.
What this means for you
For lapsed players, this is a cheap second chance. Super Mario Run launched in 2016 and quickly lost its novelty, but free daily stages reset that clock. The discount on the full unlock is the real hook if you want the full experience.
Say you downloaded Super Mario Run in 2016, played the first world, and forgot about it: link your Nintendo Account, claim your free stage today, and decide if the discounted full unlock is worth it. For Nintendo Account owners, there's zero risk in trying.
Why this matters
TouchArcade noted that Super Mario Run being shown at an Apple conference remains one of the highlights of any Apple event despite mixed opinions on the game itself. It was the first major Nintendo mobile title to launch on iOS, and it still gets ceremonial Apple-stage callouts.
Tying it to the movie release is also a marketing plug for Nintendo and Apple's long-standing relationship. Free daily stages plus a discount is a low-cost way to re-engage dormant accounts ahead of the film's April 5 bow.
What to watch next
Watch for the event's end date. Daily stage unlocks reset, so logging in even on lazy days gets you a freebie. Bottom line: link your Nintendo Account, claim the free stage, and ride the discount if the game clicks again.
