A cascade of release date changes is underway as this holiday season’s most anticipated RPGs seek to avoid bumping into each other.
The latest domino to fall is Stray Gods, the new RPG developed in part by Dragon Age writer David Gaider. Originally scheduled for release on August 3rd, it was pushed back a week to August 10th. The move follows Larian Studios’ decision to move the PC release of Baldur’s Gate 3 to avoid Starfield.
Stray Gods developer Summerfall Studios has been open about the decision to change the release date, saying it wanted to avoid Larian’s passion, which has been gaining momentum on Steam since its infamous bear sex reveal (by which we mean bear droid romance). form).
“We want everyone to have plenty of room to check out Stray Gods when it launches. Baldur’s Gate 3 is highly anticipated (ours too!) and we want to give our fans a place to celebrate Stray Gods,” the studio wrote in a statement. Posted on her social media channels.
The Wandering Gods delay is part of a knock-on effect that no doubt began when Starfield was pushed back from 2022 and into 2023. This seemed to put Todd Howard’s opus in line for direct competition with Tear of the Kingdom before it was eventually pushed to September. This resulted in Larian Studios porting Baldur’s Gate 3, which in turn affected The Wandering Gods.

In short, it’s a pretty diverse holiday season if you’re an RPG fan. Baldur’s Gate 3, Starfield, and Stray Gods are all getting positive fan buzz, and that’s not even including the Super Mario RPG Switch remake slated for later this year.
Stray Gods is the first project of Summerfall Studios. It is billed as a “role-playing musical”, having been inspired in part by the famous Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode “Once More, With Feeling”. It was written by Geider, who previously worked on Dragon Age and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It uses hand drawn images with 2D illustrations and generally looks pretty wonderful.
Stray Gods is set to release on August 3rd on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
