Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for May 30, 2023. I’ve been busy with other things today, so I had to relegate a review or two to another day. But I did manage to compile one for a 16-bit console version of the Bubble puzzle Released at the same time as the new game, so that’s what we’re starting with. After that, there is one new release to look at. just one. But it’s interesting, and it seems to have an ass, so that’s nice. Finally, the new expired sales listings. Puzzle Bobble / Bust-a-Move (16-Bit Console Version) ($7.99)
Okay, so yesterday I reviewed the latest game on Bubble puzzle series, Puzzle Bobble Everybubble!. It’s a solid new entry with a good hook to it thanks to its cooperative multiplayer. If you have friends or family to play with and don’t mind the price, this is a great pickup. But maybe you’re on a tighter budget. Maybe you’re not that into co-op. Well, there’s some good news for you, my frugal friend: the Super NES version of Bubble puzzle Released alongside the new game at a very nice price.
“But Sean,” I hear the imaginary voices cry, “why would I want the Super NES version of this game when I can buy the NEOGEO version on the Switch for the same price?” Correct question, my hallucination. Thing is, the Super NES version is Better than the original arcade. It has seventy more stages in addition to the original thirty, culminating in a final boss battle. It also adds a new battle mode, plus some special bubbles to spice things up. Sure, you can just jump Bubble puzzle 2 And reap the benefits of some of it, but if you want the original, this is the best you can get on Switch.
The emulation was handled by ININ’s regular developer, Ratalaika. You will probably recognize the interface. You can choose between the Japanese and Western versions of the game, though there’s no real reason to go with one over the other beyond language. You also get all the nice display options, including their solid CRT filter. What you don’t get, surprisingly, is any kind of state save option. You’ll have to go old school here and write your best scores on a napkin or something so you don’t lose track of them.
Bubble puzzle It’s a fun puzzle game and it pretty much knocked its concept out of the park early on, which means it’s still fun to revisit the early entries even today. The Super NES version may not be the final version of this game, but it’s definitely a step up from the NEOGEO option offered by Oger. The only thing holding it back is the strange lack of save modes, which dampens the joy of aiming for higher scores and forces you to rely on passwords to get through all the stages in story mode.

To Hell with the Ugly ($19.99)
An adventure game from ARTE Experience, based on the 1948 satirical novel of the same name by Boris Vian. You play as Rocky, a handsome young man who goes out for a night on the town and gets way more than he bargained for. He wakes up in a mysterious hospital and has to escape from the people who kidnapped him. The game is set in 1950s Los Angeles and leans heavily into the noir genre, all backed by a smooth jazz soundtrack. It’s certainly dressed well enough, but we’ll have to see if it can walk the walk.

Today’s hot deal, if you don’t already have it and have thirty-three gigabytes of free storage, is Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate. Nine bucks gets you a big pants fighting game full of things to distract you from the fact that Capcom will never grace the Switch with street fighter Beyond the third. Other than that, I have no strong recommendations. Do what your heart tells you. And your wallet. Don’t forget to consult the wallet.
