Diablo 3
Developer: Blizzard
Year: 2012
Diablo 3 can be competitive whether you’re playing with friends or solo climbing the Greater Rift boards. However, I mostly use Diablo 3 as a sort of relaxation, blasting through rifts every season, sending hundreds upon hundreds of demons to their deaths.
While the campaign is fun, it’s after you hit the level cap that Diablo 3 really shines. Once you’ve acquired enough max-level gear to kill enemies with ease, you can run through rifts or levees, destroying everything in your path. It’s satisfying to see your damage increase as you get more gear and fixed parts in a level, allowing you to increase the difficulty by another level or two at a time.
You can play Diablo 3 with friends, but for me it’s always been about the solo experience. Although I enjoy running fast through levels, I don’t want to feel rushed by others. I love being able to retrace my steps without being left behind if the familiar chime of a legendary loot drop sounds; I want to be able to take my time and clear an entire map from end to end if the urge takes me.
The only companion I need as an Exorcist is the trusty Templar and his oddly comforting Northern English accent. I don’t care what class I play, this man will always be by my side. Dead, more often, bless him, but still by my side. Maybe I have a soft spot for him because he sounds a bit like Ned Stark. Regardless, he is my demon slaying partner and partner in crime.
For me, the fun of Diablo is in the progression. I want to loot drops to make my character stronger, but at the same time, I don’t want to lose the excitement of dropping new gear. Once I get to the point where I have to fine tune my character for tiny gains, my interest wanes. My way of playing Diablo 3 may not be the most efficient, but it’s the best way for me to enjoy it.
There’s something soothing about working your way through a Diablo 3 map and destroying everything in your path while listening to the soothing classic music of the Diablo soundtrack. You don’t have to think, you just have to mow down the hordes of demons. You can go at your own pace, or speed through levels or clear each one methodically. Either way, these demons better watch out – Napalm and North are coming for them.
