ChatGPT reaches 351,000 downloads in the UK | Pocket Gamer.biz

The official ChatGPT AI app for iOS has reached 5 million downloads worldwide, and 351,000 in the UK, as of June 2023.

The latest information From Data.ai points to the popularity of the tool — which allows users to generate text-based results for several prompts — when it made the move to mobile. The app has seen many spin-offs and copycats, leaving many to predict the popularity of an official release once it hit mobile.

It seems that these predictions have come true.

Elsewhere in the world, ChatGPT was the leader in Japan, with 683,000 downloads. The popularity of the app indicates that regardless of location there is significant interest in the tool, likely due to the huge increase in interest in AI with ChatGPT being the ‘go to’ example of the technology in action. Publicity is also bad for AI as a phenomenon, it seems, making the mobile audience discover for themselves what the benefits and threats are.

Artificial intelligence, or generative AI, in its current form remains a controversial topic for many. But debates surrounding its use in everything from writing to game development continue. With some mobile game developers like Kwalee integrating the technology into their existing design process, allowing teams to share AI resources. While some in creative industries such as art have referred to the use of existing images being used without permission to trade models such as Midjourney.

One person who isn’t worried about AI replacing game developers is iLoogo Studios CEO Nikolay Minaiev, who, in an interview with guest writer Alexander Goldivin in his ongoing series, has good news for concerned creatives. “While AI has made significant progress in various fields, including developing games, it is unlikely that artificial intelligence can completely replace game developers in the near future. Game development is a highly creative and multidisciplinary process that includes various aspects, such as storytelling, art design, game mechanics, level design and sound engineering,” he comments.
