‘Brotato’ Review – This Spud May Lack Some Seasoning, but Has Salt for Miles – TouchArcade

Sometimes I choose to review a game that Jared picks for the game of the week, and it can be really difficult depending on how much he writes and how close it is to my thoughts. gross ($4.99) is going to be quite a challenge, because Jared had a lot of good and sensible things to say about him in his article. I’m going to direct you to it first, and then I’ll try to put my own spin on why gross Worth your time. So yeah, go read Jared’s words, then come back here and we’ll start this review.

Okay, I know some of you have gone and read this and some of you haven’t, so I’ll summarize what he said first before I go any further. Easy to delete gross Like another screw up Vampire survivors (free), and considering the game is free and all you might wonder why such a thing would be necessary. But there are indeed some real differences here that make for a very distinct experience compared to its obvious source of inspiration. It is in this distinct flavor that you will find gross A solid addition to your dinner plate or just some limp chips to get rid of as soon as possible.

I should go over what that is, in case you’ve been living under a rock somewhere Vampire survivors Not reached. So, you know those top-down wave-based shots? Imagine one of these, but with automatic fire. And some roguelike elements like perks and level ups that are deleted when you die. There are some permanent unlocks you can earn, which should in theory help you survive longer or at least give you a different experience on your next run. Well, that’s the gist of it. Go out and try to live as long as you can by elegantly dodging your enemies and pick up wonderful perks.

There’s usually a metagame to such things, and gross There definitely is one. You can unlock different potatoes to play with, and each one has its own characteristics that make it surprisingly unique to use. Along with choosing your weapon from the randomly selected bunch you’re presented with, this will have a dramatic effect on how you’ll have to play the current run. There are different difficulty levels to unlock. The potatoes are unlocked through various achievements, and difficulty levels are simply unlocked by completing the previous one. The goal of the metagame then is to unlock everything, but that’s not a big part of it gross as it is inside Vampire survivors. You might be able to go far with a combination presented to you from the start, even.

Focusing less on the locking meta is one way gross deviating from Vampire survivorsBut actually I would say the biggest difference comes from the arena itself. Vampire survivors It has large and spacious areas that offer you a lot of room to maneuver. Optimal strategies in this game often involve grazing incoming enemies as best you can, and you often have the space to do so. gross Does not offer such space for legs. The play area here is always very, very crowded. You can hurt the enemies a bit, but there really isn’t much room to run. This makes it less of a defensive or dodging game and more of an offensive game. If you don’t bring the fight to your enemies, you won’t last long.

Aside from handling the finishing touches, you’ll also need to carefully choose your perks, gear, and other upgrades. Almost everything you pick up gives you some benefit and some penalty. You have to decide which things are worth keeping and which will work against your playstyle. There really is quite a bit here too. You never know what things will come up and when, so you often try to make the best of a suboptimal situation. Level ups are better, just straight up give you some kind of boost to your stats. It is very important to pay attention to what you choose.

Same goes for your weapon array, and I really mean array here. Your potato can have up to six weapons stuck in it at a time, but once you hit the limit you’ll have to start making some choices. If you have two of the same weapon, you can fuse them into a more powerful version, or you can recycle a weapon to free up a slot for a new one. So again, you need to think about your strategy and what weapons will go with it. You also need to think about how they will work with each other. Six weapons might seem like a lot, and it is, but you’ll soon have to choose between one very cool weapon and another.

One hell of an advantage for the little differences that pile up inside gross is that the runs don’t last nearly as long as they tend to go in Vampire survivors. Don’t get me wrong, I love it when this game kicks the gas all the way up and you become like a god carving through hordes of monsters. But when I’m playing a mobile game, there’s a good chance I don’t have an hour to waste on one session. Brotato runs seem to last just long enough for a good choke without requiring you to settle for a full freeze. It’s a more direct game that gives you a lot less room to work with, and that’s the fruit of that. Maybe this is what you are looking for; Maybe it’s not. But it’s at least a distinguishing factor, and in this climate it’s worth its weight in gold.

gross He is not ashamed of where he draws from, but this game also drew from the roots gross Kind of brings things back. It’s probably less epic than that Vampire survivors, and I very much doubt that she will have one hundredth of his influence. But there’s an immediacy and focus to it that calls back to the kind of play we used to get in abundance and probably took for granted, and I can’t help but appreciate that. If that sounds good to you, then grab some of these chips to go.
