Aaron Orr’s 2021 Mobile Game of the Year: Rocket League Sideswipe | Pocket Gamer.biz

This year I played a lot of mobile games and as such it took me a long time to narrow down my choices to what really captured me. Because of the sheer number of everyday titles added to the app market, it can be easy to toss aside a title you once loved for a newer thrill.

I often find myself going back to pre-loved titles, like last summer’s experience with Pokemon Go, but in the end the nostalgia diminishes and I want something new. If you’ve been following our game of the week (and if not, why not?) Then my choice will not surprise you.

Skating away

Rocket League Sideswipe is a mobile version of the so-called car football game, developed by Psyonix. Despite its recent release, I have already spent many more hours on Sideswipe than many other games combined.

Sideswipe brings the players to a two-dimensional pitch which means there is no difficulty in trying to control a disturbing camera angle to know where the ball is. Without struggling with camera controls, you can focus on guiding your car, and allow even novice players the opportunity for techniques to score extravagant goals.

I have to admit that one of the main reasons I enjoy playing Sideswipe is that I’m pretty good, which is a stark contrast to my predecessor skills. Since every online game is rated, it is essential to my self-esteem to continue to move up the ranks. The game is still young and many players are learning just like me, maybe this time next year I will return to the bronze rank, struggling desperately just to hit back down.

For me, Rocket League Sideswipe is everything a mobile game should be. It can be played in short sessions, including simple mechanics, and provides a fascinating gameplay experience that really makes your dopaminergic tracks flow. Not only is Sideswipe the epitome of mobile gaming, it’s a great example of how to reinvent a favorite franchise for an even wider audience.
